Climbing Mount Sinai at Sunrise: A First-Timer's Guide

How hard the climb is, what to wear and how to make the most of sunrise on the summit.

Watching the sun rise from the summit of Mount Sinai (2,285 m) is one of the most memorable moments in Egypt.

The route

Most travellers take the Camel Path — a wide trail of about 7 km — followed by the final 750 steep steps. The climb takes 2.5–3 hours, starting around 1:30 at night.

What to wear

It is cold at the top, even in spring. Bring a warm jacket, gloves and a hat; blankets can be rented on the summit. Wear good walking shoes and carry a head torch.

Tips

  • Walk slowly and steadily; there are tea stops along the way.
  • Camels can carry you most of the way up (not on the steps).
  • Visit St. Catherine's Monastery after the descent — check opening days in advance.
